General Notes: Dwarf puffers are strictly freshwater fish. They do best in a species-only tank, with perhaps otos or shrimp as tankmates. The do not do well in a community setting, and may attack other fish, despite their small size. They require excellent water parameters and are sensitive to medications. Keep only one per 2 or 3 gallons of water. A sunken stomach on a puffer indicates internal parasites.
While they do puff, it is not good for them and done only under extreme stress. If a puffer puffs outside of the water, it will likely die, so it's best to catch them in a cup, not a net.
They like heavily planted, complex tanks that break lines of sight among the puffers. It is best to keep only one male per two or three females. Males have light colored wrinkles behind their eyes and develop a stripe along the stomach when mature.
These are very entertaining fish.

I have 3 Dwarf Puffers in my 10 gallon tank. I highly recommend them to anyone who wants some fish that are different and personality. They are fun to watch as they swim around. These fish are very friendly and will come up to glass and look at you. I would give them a ten but they are picky about what they eat, so for that they get a nine.

I keep the puffers for almost 3 years. Well, initially I had 5 puffers (2 males, 3 females) and they managed to live for a year and a half together in a 29 g community densely planted tank (neons, zebras, cories). They never harmed any fish other than themselves. Gradually they killed each other. It was cruel and long lasting competition and I will spare the details - I am actually going to write a book about it  - so complex and weird their soapopera developments were. Eventually a single male survived and is living happily for 2 years already alone in my community tank. He obviously misses romance because he actually tried to mate with a cory once (unsuccessfully) but other than that he is very well off on his own.
I am not going to get this kind of fish (too much stress) because I had enough, and accidentally they disappeared from PetsMart's tanks for some reason. These guys are very cute and hardy. They need live food (snails and/or worms) and planted tanks with many nooks and cranies. 10g tank is not enough for 2 puffers.
I disagree with the notion of keeping them in species only tanks. They do very well with mollies, zebras and other active free-spirited fish.
I would highly recommend this fish for devoted fishkeepers. These are not researched very well and when kept in optimum conditions give up many of their secrets and are great for observing and taking notes. They have very distinct personalities, their mating rituals are fascinating. They are fierce little buggers.
They are not difficult to keep! Just be sure to have at least 20 g densely planted and cosy tank, do not be afraid to put some zebras in it and that's it. Water changes 50% can be done bi-weekly if the tank is truly heavily planted, if not - weekly.
Enjoy this fish ! (if you can tolerate their antics).

I have 3 myself and there neat fish they are in a 5 gallon tank and doing fine.
