Description:
|
This small rainbowfish (which grows to approximately 2" - 2.5") bears more resemblance to its full size relatives than to many other small rainbow species.
It has many of the same characteristics of the full size rainbows, though it may be a bit less territorial.
As with all rainbowfish, it is a schooling species and should be kept in groups of 5 or more, with a bare minimum of three individuals.
The body of the fish is a silvery blue. The fins of the males will be a deep orange to red and the females are usually yellow-orange to orange.
This species is very active and should have a tank that accomodates this tendency. Meaty foods, as well as vegetable-based foods, are eaten with vigor.
Dwarf Rainbows spend the majority of their time in the middle portion of the tank, though they will occasionally swim at all levels.
A peaceful fish (though males may occasionally exhibit territorialism to other males) that fares well in community tanks.

These fish are among the prettiest. They don't usually look too great in the store but once they get used their home tank they can be one of the most eye-catching fish in the tank. They love to show off those shiny scales if sunlight hits the tank. I haven't seen them bother anyone, they eat anything that's offered, and they don't grow past about two, two-and-a-half inches.
