Description:
|
Lighting Level: High
Placement: Middle to Bottom
Difficulty: Difficult
Water Flow: Moderate to Strong
Temperament: Aggressive
Endemic Area: Indonesia
Other Info: A species which is quite elegant that has plagued many hopefully aquarists. Its success is often fickle. Many suggest perfect water maintenance, especially with calcium and trace elements. It is often kept synonymously or marked incorrectly with the Alveopora family, which has 12 tentacles, opposed to the common 24. It is often wrong to generalize that all of these species are difficult to keep. The most common harvested species, G. stokesi, often suffers a slow, wasting condition. Common species include sp. stokesi, fructicosa, stutchburyi, pandoraensis, dijboutiensis and cf. somaliensis and tenuidens. However, some others of this species are likewise difficult to maintain, although there are some that do not usually suffer this wasting condition. Literature often cites the necessary maintenance of water quality, light, and food. The accumulation or nitrate and phosphate, the maintenance of calcium and alkalinity in closed systems, and a missing magic ingredient have been the focus of numerous theories concerning the demise of this coral. Some theorists suggest that feeding is essential for their survival, often being phytoplankton and brine shrimp. This however has been negated by the survival of the species in a natural sunlight, closed environment with no supplied plankton. Generally, the true red form has been deemed easiest of the species to keep. The blue and purple varieties often require more finicky lighting requirements, often by metal halides and towards the top of the tank. It has been suggested by Julian Sprung that the addition iron and manganese, necessary supplements for plants, has resulted in voluminous polyp and tentacle extension in the G. tenuidens species. Supposedly, this iron and manganese addition helps to alleviate bleaching symptoms often seen in this species. These elements are necessary for detoxification of a particular reactive oxygen species by the enzyme superoxide dismutase. Other existing theories of the goniopora demise include clownfish pestering or tearing up polyps, the boring algae species Ostreobium, air in the skeleton, food requirements, bleaching induced starvation, improper lighting, and bacterial infection resulting in bleaching. Continual contact with other close-by colonies has indicated increased survival rates. Much of its nutrition, if not all, is provided by the hosted zooxanthellae. It is important to prevent damage to the meaty section of the coral, as any damage often results in the loss of the specimen. The species can greatly increase in size when the polyps are fully extended, where it can sting other species of corals.

Agreed... near impossible to keep longterm

This coral rarely survives in captivity, I purchased one a while back not knowing that and it croaked shortly after.
