Other Info: Consists mainly of two species, B. wellsi, the large polyped species with corallites 9-14 mm in diameter with more numerous septa, and B. merleti that has a corallite diameter less than 7 mm and is also more prevalent in East African waters. They have relatively large, fleshy polyps that cover the calcareous skeleton beneath. They can form small to medium sized colonies that bare a resemblance to Brain Corals or Favites. Blastomussa possess small blunt teeth with mantles (no tentacles) that are extended during the day and often form a continuous surface covering the skeleton. Mantles may be red, green, pink, or gray with oral discs that are usually green, but may be red or gray. Its nutrition is provided mainly by photosynthesis and may accept smaller foods such as brine shrimp.
