Level of care: Medium
General Notes: This species is found in only a few locations in Papua New Guinea, including the eastern lowlands and the Musa River. They are somewhat common in the clear, swift streams that are abundant with aquatic vegetation that run throughout the rainforests in those areas.

Its diet naturally consists of insects, both aquatic and terrestrial, larvae and small aquatic crustaceans.

As with most Rainbowfish, males are easily distinguished from their female counterparts. Males will have extended dorsal and anal fins and will display much more prominent, vivid colorations. Females tend to be slightly less colorful and have shorter, clearish fins, in addition to being slightly smaller and thinner.

The Fork-Tailed Blue eye is an active schooling fish that thrives in a planted tank that provides plenty of dense vegetation, as well as open swimming space; best kept in groups of 5 or more. It will stay in the upper regions of the aquarium. It is a peaceful species that must not be kept with any aggressive or predatory fish.

Breeding of this egg-laying species is considered easy to medium in terms of difficulty.

This species has undergone a series of name changes over the years, finally returning to the currently accepted original name of Pseudomugil furcatus (1955). They were, at different points, referred to as Popondetta furcata (1982) and Popondichthys furcatus (1987) and are sometimes erroneously listed under those names.
