Hygrophila polysperma var “broad leaf”, as its name implies, is a larger variation of the normal H. polysperma. It hails from Southeast Asia and India, where it is found both submersed and emersed. It has large lanceolate green leaves.
This species is an excellent beginner’s plant due to its undemanding nature. It will thrive in a wild array of aquarium conditions. In aquariums with stronger lighting, the leaves will often develop a reddish hue, especially nearer the top of the plant. The growth rate of this plant is quite fast and is a good candidate for a newly planted aquarium in order to prevent algae growth. The addition of carbon dioxide is not necessary, but will vigorously promote growth, as with most species.
Trimming can be accomplished by topping off the stems (cutting the tops off and replanting them) or by trimming the tops off and allowing the bottoms to regrow. This will promote lush, thick growth.
H. polysperma “broad leaf” will send out horizontal shoots across the tank, and does require a fair bit of trimming and maintenance to prevent it from taking over the aquarium. Broad Leaf Hygrophila will also “self-propagate” by forming new plantlets on stems that are allowed to float across the water.
Due to its size, this species is perhaps best suited for medium to very large tanks, either in the midground or background.
