Description:
|
Compatibility: Peaceful, community
Maximum Size: 4 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 29g
Temperature: 72-84F
Diet:
Level of care: Easy
General Notes:
This species is often referred to as a corydoras species, and frequently sold as one, it is technically not a corydoras. It looks very similar in structure and shape, but exhibits a slightly longer snout, taller body and reaches a larger size than its close relative, the cory. Brochis species also have more dorsal fin rays than Corydoras. Brochis splendens usually has between 10-12 spinal rays, whereas cories have between 6 and 8. This specific species ranges from a metallic Emerald green in color to a brownish-grey, with a pale white or tan underside.
Specimens in the wild tend to exhibit a much more vibrant metallic green. Providing a proper tank environment with a sandy bottom, dim lighting, plenty of rocks, wood, and caves seems to help this fish's natural colors emerge. It has been reported that exposure to natural sunlight can also help.
Brochis splendens originate in South where they inhabit densely vegetated, low-current waters with a sandy or silt substrate. However, this fish may also be found in fast-flowing creeks or large rivers, as well as flooded, muddy areas.
In the home aquarium, this fish must be kept with peaceful species, as it is peaceful itself. It is a schooling fish that must be kept with members of its own kind. Some will school with corydoras species although it seems they would prefer other Brochis splendens. It spends its time inhabiting only the lower level of the tank, foraging for food throughout the day.
Because of this tendency to be in contact with the substrate for the majority of the time, sharp or rough-edge gravel should be avoided or it can lead to stomach irritation and barbel erosion and infection.
Their diet should include sinking vegetable matter such as algae wafers, zucchini, cucumber, as well as meaty foods such as sinking shrimp pellets, frozen bloodworms, etc.
B. splendens seems to be more skittish than most cory species.

I love these types of catfish. they are great tank cleaners, love to shoal, and are actually funny to watch their antics. If one gets surprised by a fish, then the whole shoal begins to swim up and down! Funny guys, a great community fish in groups

This is a great fish. They are excellent at cleaning extra food from the tank bottom, and are fun to watch. They are great community fish, and my ram likes to swim up and down the tank wall and eat with them. I recommend getting more than one, because it makes them more active.
