Description:
|
Compatibility: Predatory Species Only Tank
Maximum Size: 12 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 150-200G
Temperature: 75-81F
Diet: Carnivore, be sure to feed a good mix of foods (beef heart, feeder fish, shrimp, pellets)
Level of care: Moderate
General Notes: The piranha has a reputation for being a bloodthirsty monster. Much of this is hype and is greatly exaggerated. While you should not take chances with this fish, many people swim regularly with the piranha in South American waters. This practice becomes dangerous during the dry season when piranha can become concentrated in isolated pools. Once it has consumed the available prey and is threatened with starvation the piranha poses a very serious threat to any creature entering the water. They tend to be very shy and do better in groups of at least 5. When small they look like the red belly pacu. Be sure to have good filtration on a piranha tank, as they can be very messy fish.
