General Notes: This striking fish, which was discovered in the 1864 in Sydney, is found in the regions of Australia. It is a member of the Pseudomugilinae or "Blue eye" sub-family, which indicates that this fish has a vibrant blue eye. It has a wide spread population base and therefore can be found in freshwater, brackish, and pure marine water. As a result, it is extremely important to know the origin of this species before purchase; while they are adaptable in the sense that they are found in all three water types, they do not tolerate change and must be kept in the water type they were raised in.

The markings on this fish are variable due to their large geographical base. Scientific testing in 1979 from samples taken from 14 areas along the eastern shore of Australia indicated that all of the samples were scientifically indistinguishable, despite the different coloration/appearance.

As with all rainbowfish, the males are much more colorful and display more elaborate fins. The females of this species have a clear dorsal fin that is smaller and rounded. Males have extended anal fins and two extended dorsal fins that are close to each other with elaborate coloration and form. Males from northern Queensland populations display the most elongated finnage. Northern populations tend to achieve slightly larger size, approximately 2.5", and southern populations tend to stay smaller than 1.75".

In the wild, they feed on insects (both aquatic and terrestrial) and small crustaceans.

This species is sensitive to less than ideal water conditions. An aquarium with many hiding places, a dark substrate and a dark background enhance this fish's colors.

The Pacific Blue Eye is an active schooling fish that must be kept with other Pacific Blue Eyes. They will occupy the top third of the tank and can be combined with peaceful community fish.

This species was recorded under a variety of different scientific names, though Pseudomugil signifer is regarded as the accurate one. Picture shows a male with displayed fins, likely from a northern population.

Limited availability in the aquarium trade.
