Description: Compatibility: Peaceful
Maximum Size: 3-4 inches (Non-Jumbo)
Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons
Temperature: 76-80 F
Diet: Carnivore, readily accepts all processed foods
Level of care: Easy
General Notes: Should be kept in a school of no less than 12. Tank should be at least 4' long. These are an open water cichlid from Lake Tanganyika, and in the wild schools number into the thousands. Cyps are dimorphic, with males having stunning colors while females are much more drab in appearance.
Cyps are mouth brooders, with the female carring the eggs in her mouth for around 4 weeks before she will release the new fry.
They are fairly mild-mannered cichlids and are well suited to fill out the middle and upper levels of a cichlid community tank.

Pros: Peaceful upper level cichlid, Males have great color, Easy to breed
Cons: Can be expensive

Cyps can really round out a larger cichlid community tank. Most of the time they are very well mannered, but males can be nippy at time. Thankfully they have small mouths, so no major damage is normally done. I have a group of 14, and although not fully mature yet, the males already show wonderful color, and are breeding for me in my 75 gallon. I would highly recommend these for anyone with a large enough tank.
