BuenosAires2

Description: Compatibility: Peaceful Schooling Community Fish
Maximum Size: 3 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 15 G
Temperature: 72-82F
Diet: Not a picky eater. Feed a good quality flake food, supplemented with live/frozen foods.
Level of care: Easy
General Notes: The Buenos Aires Tetra is a schooling tetra that gets larger than some of the more popular schooling tetras. Keep them in groups of 5 or more to keep their aggression at a minimum. Also note that this fish may eat some of the more delicate plants so it might not work well for a planted tank.

Pros: Grow large enough to serve as dithers for medium sized cichlids.
Cons: Aggressive, fin nippers, plant eaters.

I usually recommend these fish as dithers for medium sized (5-7") Central American cichlids.
They can certainly handle themselves quite well with more boisterous tankmates and hadle lower temps like a dream. They're very hardy fish with punky attitudes. They tend to be quite nippy, doesn't matter how large and aggressive a tankmate may be, these guys seem to let their curiosity rule.
In small numbers they may pick on eachother relentlessly so it is recommended that the be kept in shoals of at least 8. This would require a decent size tank, preferably one of at least 55 gallons.
If you're in need of a tetra that can hold it's own then Buenos Aires tetras are right up your alley.

Pros: Fast
Cons: Not too colorful

I agree with straitjacket above. These guys provide activity in a usually mellow cichlid tank. I've got 3 of these guys as dithers (along with 2 Giant Danios & 3 Angelicus Botias & 1 Rubberlip Pleco) in my showcase with my female Midas Cichlid. I got them because they're tough & active, but yet dont take the spotlite away from my showcase Midas.
