Description:
|
Compatibility: Said to be peacful for a cichlid, but caution must be taken, as these are cichlids and have the potential to become aggressive.
Maximum Size: 4-6 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 40gal
Temperature: 72-82F
Diet: Omnivore
Level of care: Easy
General Notes: The blood parrot cichlid is a man-made hybrid. The exact origins of the fish are unclear but it appears to be a cross between a South American cichlid, likely the severum (Heros severus) and a Central American cichlid, likely the midas cichlid (Amphilophus citrinellum) or the red devil (Amphilophus labiatum).
This fish is a very contriversial one. Being a hybrid it does not get much support from the natural fish crowd. It is not only a hybrid but does have certain deformaties that you usually never see in the species that are said to make it up, nor in most other hybrids, although any hybridization may produce deformaties over time. A lot of cichlid keepers say these look like goldfish rather than cichlids. Others find them quite pleasurable and love to keep them, which is why they continue to be a somewhat popular fish in the aquarium trade.

I have one in a comunity tank with small neons small angels as well as large large pleco small zebra danios rosy minnows red tail sharks all live well together with no agressive tendencies. I have seen them in several community tanks here in canada and all reports are they are friendly fish. The largest I have seen is about 10-12". mine is about 5''

I would recommend just blood parots in their own tank with maybe some catfish for clean-up.I would also recommend purchasing young fish together and raising them together rather than sporadic purchases of separate individuals from different sources. For some reason I believe they bond with juvenile tank mates of their own kind and settle in more quickly to a new environment when moved together to a new set-up.IMO.I also have notice when treated this way ,their agression is subtle.More akin to a hierarchy or pecking order.Individuals hold their own and exist on their merit. These fish seem to watch everything in the room and distinguish between family members and strangers. The all snuggle together at night to sleep or when frightened. They are fascinating to share your life with.
