This tuberous central Sri Lankan native is naturally found in both still and moving clear waters. Its leaves are a vibrant green and have a “ruffling” on the edges, which gives the plant a soft, frilly look. The scientific name of this plant is derived from this characteristic: crispus is a derivative of crispate, which means “notched or curled irregularly”. They are also semi-transparent and lanceolate in shape and are supported by a fairly long petiole.

A. crispus is perhaps one of the Aponogeton species best suited for the average home aquarist because unlike many other in its genus, A. crispus does not need to undergo a dormant period in the aquarium. In the wild, this plant is only fully underwater during the rainy season and so it has a cyclical life. During the dry periods, the plant is dormant.

This plant will reach a height of ten to eighteen inches, making it ideal as a background plant in larger aquariums. It is not well-suited for smaller aquaria because of this factor. To prevent this plant from overpowering the aquarium, the leaves around the outside of the plant may be cut at the base and removed. Doing so stimulates healthy, new growth.

A. crispus is tolerant of many water conditions and will live in hard water though growth is reportedly optimal in soft, acidic water. Co2 is not necessary to growth but as with most plants, the addition of carbon dioxide will greatly boost the rate of growth.

A. crispus requires a nutrient rich substrate as it is a heavy root feeder. In adequate condtions, this plant will flower somewhat regularly and the blooms last from one to two weeks. The flowers emerge from a vertical inflorescence that is covered with small white-ish blooms above the surface of the water. The flowers are rather delicate looking and are very attractive and graceful.

It is known to hybridize with other members of its genus, such as Aponogeton undulatus.

Propagation is achieved via division of the tuber or by seeds. Plants may be artificially pollinated with the aid of a soft feather or brush which is used to gently brush up against each flower stalk.

Pros: fast, easy growing
Cons: grow too tall for some aquariums

This is a great, fast growing plant and sometimes can grow too big for some tanks and creates a big shadow. Also if the plant gets eaten by other fish or dies out it can be regrown again but you need to keep the bulb. The aponogeton crispus i have propogates by sending a long stem and at the end of it there is a smaller version of an aponogeton crispus and slowly grows roots until you cut it off and plant into the ground.

I bought 4 bulbs for 1.99 at walmart.
Great growing, but do not plant too deep in the gravel. I only had one bloom, untill I dug out the others and noticed roots. I brought them to the top, and they fully bloomed 2 days later.

I placed four bulbs in my tank, thinking I may see growth in a few weeks... three days later, the plants were an inch tall, and started growing about an inch a day. Now, about two months later, each plant sends a flower to the surface at least every week.

Bottom line is, it is a nice plant, IF you have room for it.
