Description: Compatibility: Semi-Aggressive Cichlid Community
Maximum Size: 4-6 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 29G
Temperature: 76-80F
Diet: Carnivore, will accept flake food, but loves krill, mysis, shrimp
Level of care: Moderate
General Notes: Despite their large mouth, this fish is not a threat to other adult fish in the tank. They will however be a threat to any fry that aren't well guarded or hidden. They are laterally compressed which allows them to reach into crevices that other fish cannot. They are pretty mild mannered fish (mind their own business), somewhat aggressive to conspecifics (fish that look like them) and have a very interesting way of bending their body and sticking out spines towards any fish who bothers them. They grow VERY slowly, so they can be happily housed in tanks as small as 29G for a long time, however tanks of over 100G are reccomended for adultes of the species. You can keep Comps as single fish in a community setup, or in a colony.
There are several color variations of this fish, the red fin (whole body has a red/orange coloring instead of the usual brownish green), gold head (same coloring as the normal comp, only the front 1/3 of the body is yellow) and Kalambo (has a yellow body with green/blue fins).
Comps are closely related to the Altolamprologus Calvus, the main difference is the shape of the face. Calvus has a long sloping face, whereas the Comps have a sloping forehead with a turned up snout. Also, comps have more distinct bars and faint spots...while the calvus have more distinct spots and faint bars.

Pros: cute, grows slow, fun to watch eat, not aggressive but holds its own
Cons:

This fish is one of the favorites in my 29. He has barely grown since I got him about a year ago. This fish is a kick to watch eat when you feed live food (such as ghost shrimp), they like to stop dead in the water and sort of \"sneak\" up to the prey and then they strike! They have very large mouths and seem to eat more than any of the other fish, even ones larger than him. The gal I bought him from has a full size adult in one of her show tanks and he is just the coolest looking fish. She called him a horseface cichlid...which I dont remember seeing that when I was doing research on them, but I can kind of see the horse face reference on their face. He does a good job of keeping the brichardi population down in this tank...so if you want to keep fry...dont keep this fish with them!! He is not aggressive, but will eat anything that fits in his mouth and can hold his own against other more aggressive fish in the tank. He bends his body towards the other fish to show them his scales (I guess he does that because his scales are sharp and would cut the lips of any fish who tried to bite him). Very cool fish I would highly reccomend.
