Description:
|
Compatibility: Semi-aggressive Cichlid Community
Maximum Size: 4.5 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 29G
Temperature: 77-80F
Diet: In the wild this fish is a predator of tiny copepods, insects etc...but in aquariums they will readily accept flake food and most live/frozen foods.
Level of care: Easy
General Notes: n. cylindricus are cave/rock dwellers, which means that you need to have many caves and places for them to not just hide, but LIVE in a tank. This fish will not bother plants in the tank. They can be somewhat shy, but have gorgeous subdued coloring when you see them. They have 10 black vertical bars from nose to tail and depending on where their family is from in the lake those bars range in color from dark black to a light brown and there is some difference in the width of the bars. Some color morphs have a dash of blue at the edges of their fins and just under their eye, another has a yellowish/gold head when they are younger and then the gold fades as they mature. Do not keep this fish with conspecifics (similarly colored/shaped fish, such as the lelupi) because they will not tolerate them. This fish is best kept either as a colony in a species only tank, or a breeding pair (or single) in a tanganyikan community tank. Also, best not to keep with shell dwellers, as they have been known to be pretty sneaky and pull females out of shells to get to a brood of fry.

Pros:
|
pretty, unique fish

|
Cons:
|
doesn\'t seem to be able to hold its own against more aggressive fish

This fish was one of 5 pairs I got originally for my tanganyikan tank...they lived up to what I read about them. They like to hang out in their cave, one picked its \"cave\" to be the heater and constantly hung out vertically behind the heater unless it was out cruising for food. The kind I have is the type with lighter bands and blue on the tips of the fins, the picture definitely doesn\'t do them justice! I think if I was going to get more of these fish I would try them in a colony setting where there were fewer \"bully\" fish around to stress them out.
