This peaceful fish is a schooling fish that needs to be kept in groups of 5 or more. Threadfins greatly prefer slightly acidic, well planted aquariums with open swimming space and tend to show intensified colors when in a tank with a dark background and dark gravel. Threadfins are not fond of strong currents.
It is best to provide two females for each male. Threadfins are easy to sex: males have elongated finnage while females do not.
Much like Celebes Rainbowfish, Threadfins are very delicate and are sensitive to water parameters. Low nitrates are a must and the water must be clean. Threadfins are known to die for no apparent reason and are rather susceptible to disease; they are also hard to come by and can be expensive, which makes them ill-suited for the beginner aquarist.
Due to their peaceful nature and long finnage, Threadfins must be kept in a peaceful community aquarium or a species only tank.
As with other rainbowfish, care must be taken to avoid cross-breeding when several types of rainbowfish are kept. This species has an incredibly tiny mouth that can make feeding difficult. Very small foods, or micropellets, are best; otherwise, starvation is risked.

Great fish to have, males like to show off and flash their finagle at each other. Makes for great entertainment. They seem be delicate. Males can injure each other if their showing off gets too intense. Wonderful fish for community tank.

The last poster must have scored some special deal on these fish. Normal prices are upwards of ten US dollars per fish.
The single biggest problem I have with these fish is feeding them. They're mouths are really very tiny. They ought to have a special diet of microfoods and cultures. Even normal size bloodworm pieces are too big for their mouths. I fear I lost several of these fish because of this problem. They are very delicate and are truly sensitive to water parameters - more so than other rainbowfish. One other problem I had with these fish is that mine did not appear to display 1/4 as much as the celebese do. Also, while these fish are beautiful in their subtle gradation of colors, this appearance is lost at any distance away from the tank because they are small and hard to see.
One of my favorite fish, but, oddly enough, but I'm not sure I would purchase them again...merely because feeding was difficult and I'd need them in a smaller tank to truly enjoy (they were in a 55g...I would be more tempted next time to put them in a 29g long or something with similar dimensions).

When I first saw this fish, I had to have. Yes, I bought on impulse, but it was worth it. Mine is a male and has a silvery shiny blue hue to it. Such a beautiful fish. If you can find one for 2 and a half bucks like the first poster did, buy about a dozen. You will not regret it.

Simply stunning fish. The males display and dance for each other. It is quite a sight to see. They also turn deep red while doing this. They are a delicate fish and are known to die for no reason. I recently lost one. They are expensive around $8 to $10 a fish and are hard to find. Feeding is a problem as they have small mouths and throats. They are also fussy eaters and will not compete for food or eat from the bottom. They are best with other small fish such as killifish. They are worth having and i love them.

When I saw their fins, I wanted them! I have 3 of them and they let my male endler school with them. They do have small mouths but all you have to do is crumple the flakes(if you have flake food) into tiny pieces as if you're feeding guppy fry and they'll eat it. It is working for me so far. Great fish.
