Description: Compatibility: Peaceful Community Fish
Maximum Size: 17 Inches
Minimum Tank Size: 55G
Temperature: 72-82F
Diet: algae, veggies
Level of care: Easy
General Notes: The common Pleco (or Plecostomus) works hard to keep your tank free of algae. Some plecos tend to get lazy as they get older and stop cleaning as much algae and prefer to be fed. This fish can get VERY LARGE in aquariums...do not be fooled by the 2 inch fish you bring home from your lfs. They grow pretty quickly and produce a fair amount of waste. Like other algae eaters this fish is mostly noctournal.

Pros:
Cons:

How could you not love this fish? Ulgy as sin,oh yes,but then again so am I,and people still love me!!!!! What I mean is it has a bit of ulgy charm about it. Its kept by nearly everone at one stage, although it can get very big!!! There are \"better\" algae eaters out there, but for \"cheap as chips\" money you get a good little algae eater.

Pros: really ugly in a cute way, cleans well, peaceful
Cons: gets big

I love my plecos. He can even be pretty with the lights turned on in the tank and his belly markings show up. Really cheap, they keep the walls clean, they leave other fish alone, and they\'re really fun to watch when they suck on the walls.

Pros: Cheap, some have really neat skin patterns, fun to watch them \"vacum\"
Cons: Grows to the approxamit size of the Brooklyn Bridge

Cheapist alge-eater on the face of the planet, almost. Sure they\'re ugly, but hey better to have a clean tank with it then a dirty tank without it. Before my mom retired she had a tank in her office with one of these guys and I liked to sit on one of the chairs in the waiting room to watch him. Just about the best \"tankbuster\" you could get.

Pros: good cleaner
Cons: big and messy

They do seem to grow rather quickly, but if you get a healthy one they are pretty hardy. I\'d suggest not buying one until you\'ve had your tank up and going for a while. That way they have some algea readily available. Generally mine leaves the other fish alone. But he does get upset and he\'ll stop eating if any of the other fish are fighting. I have discovered I can\'t keep knife fish, they swim too close to him, and he\'ll cut them with his sharp fins. Not intentionally, just in a, \'give me my space\' kind of way.

Cons:

Not very attractive, but an important addition to any established tank. Cleaned up all my brown algae in 3 days.
