Description: The clown pleco is a very shy fish that may be hard to spot, especially during the daytime hours as it is a nocturnal species that is most active at night. The Clown Pleco tends to be less shy in dimly lit tanks.
In a proper environment (dim lighting, many rocks, pieces of wood, a dark substrate and background) this fish become much more visible as it tends to feel secure enough to move around during the day.
Naturally, it is found hiding amongst the roots and driftwood structures along the banks of South American rivers, particularly in the Orinoco basin area. In the wild, its striped appearance allows it to blend in without being seen.
Due to its small stature, it is an excellent candidate for tanks that could not house its larger counterpart, the common pleoco. The Clown Pleco is a peaceful species that tolerates members of its own kind, provided that there is ample space and food. Often, it will defend a small piece of territory that it has claimed from other fish, but will not cause damage.
This species is not a very effective algae eater in most cases and should not be added if the sole reason is to consume algae.
Panaque maccus requires wood in its diet and should be kept in a tank with a fair amount of driftwood. Feedings of zucchini, cucumber, sweet potato, lettuce, sinking shrimp pellets and algae wafers are relished and should be fed.
It should be noted that this species is sensitive to high nitrate levels and that the water should be kept clean, with a fair amount of current.

The MFT description pretty much says it all about these guys. Mine is very, very shy, and I can go a week without seeing him. When the lights go out, I can occasionally spot him, but he won\'t venture out from the safety of the plants and driftwood. They blend in very well with their surroundings, especially if they\'re hanging out near driftwood. The brown coloration with ivory-ish stripes is great camoflauge.
If you have driftwood, then feeding won\'t be an issue. I drop in an algae tab every other night, but I have no idea if the pleco eats it. He must be getting plenty of nutrients off the driftwood. They don\'t eat algae. Try some Otos is you have a mess that needs cleaned up.
Overall, the Clown Pleco is a great ornamental plec to have, especially for small tanks. And it\'s a special day if you get to see them moving around at work doing whatever it is they do.

My friend got me a clown pleco...At first I didnt pay much attention because it was so shy I would only spot it on the glass when the lights were ioff in the morning. I have a very large piece of driftwood, which it loves to stick to. It is incredible how well it blends in with the driftwood. It has almost doubled in size since I got it a month ago, and I suspect all it is eating is the driftwood, as the driftwood now how all of these fresh, light streaks where it has been grazing. It\'s a fun challenge trying to find out where it is hiding during the daylight hours.

My Clown Pleco hides a lot. He loves to rasp on driftwood. Clown Plecos are excellent fish for anyone who loves Plecos and has a small tank.
