balashark

Description: Compatibility: Peaceful Community Fish
Maximum Size: 14 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 55-75g
Temperature: 72-82F
Diet: Not a picky eater, will accept most flake, live/frozen foods.
Level of care: Moderate (due to size of tank)
General Notes: Balas are also commonly referred to as "silver sharks" and are a mid level swimmer. This fish prefers to be with several of its own kind. Due to its large adult size and the fact that they're very active, they need to be in a very large tank with a lot of swimming room. A 55G should work for a long time...but will probably not work permanently, especially if you have a large group of these. They are mainly a peaceful fish, but as they get larger you might want to make sure there aren't any fish in the tank that will fit in their mouths. Be sure to watch when you have the tank lid off, as they have been known to be jumpers. You can reduce the risk of them jumping by making sure they are in a large enough tank and keeping a close eye on your water conditions.

Pros:
Cons:

Balas are a nice fish to have if you enjoy watching them but they can be skitish and jumpy, I recommend larger than a 55g if you are going to have 2 or more since they do get quite large, I currently have 5 in a 125g and it seems to be good they love being able to swim more now that they have a larger home....They do the whole shark feeding frenzy when I feed them and it's fun to watch....and yes they will jump out of the tank, I had it happen when I was cleaning the tank and once one tried to jump out of the rubbermaid container I had him in when I was moving...

Pros: Pretty Fish, CHEAP
Cons: Not good in a 55 gallon tank, 75 Gallon or more!

Nice sharks. I personally loved their tails and just their silver and black. Mine wasnt as active as most. They are fairly hardy fish. They seem to be real nervous fish. Never had one try to jump out like others but mine was a less "sharky" bala. I reccomend a 75+ Gallon tank. No eating problems. Really nice shark. Good with smaller fish than themselves. *My bala was a more calm bala than most
