Description:
|
Compatibility: Community fish
Maximum Size: 6 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 55G
Temperature: 76-80F
Diet: herbivore, loves veggies, flake food, would accept bloodworms or brine shrimp. Watch out, as they may eat plants.
Level of care: Easy
General Notes: Even though these fish don't get too big (reports of up to 9 inches in aquaria) they prefer a large tank with lots of swimming room. You can keep Silver Dollars alone or in pairs...however they are more active when in a group of four or more. They are related to the Pirhana although it is a herbivore.

|
|
Cons:

Will eat plants,very jumpy.

Not one to keep if you like live plants,as they will grase them down to the stem!!!
Dollars, are lovely looking fish, the lights flashing off the silver flanks and the red flashes on there fins is very pleasing to the eye.
They where the first fish I got, they grow very fast if fead plenty of greens. Make sure you have at least one cave big enough for them to hid in,as sometimes this fish likes to hid when the lights go on.
They are very jumpy,so watch out whene cleaning out your tank!! Also I would not keep then with anything too fast as it may frighten them.

Pros:

They have personality, larger fish that won't eat your little guys
|
|
Cons:
|
They will eat your plants and steal your pleco's algea wafers
|
|
I have two of these in my 55g tank with my X-ray tetras and rasboras. They leave the little fish alone and keep to themselves. They do stick close together much of the time and have been known to splash the water for no reason from time to time. They can accellerate from 0 to 60 instantly and like to have some swimming room so I agree with the 55g tank recomendation.
My only complaint with them is that they tend to steal the algea wafers that I drop in for the pleco. The best way I have found to minimize this is to shut off all the lights in the tank and the room that the tank is in for about an hour prior to dropping the wafer in. Then the pleco has a fighting chance to grab it before one of these greedy little guys gets to it.
