Description:
|
Compatibility: Peaceful, community
Maximum Size: 4-6"
Minimum Tank Size: 45g
Temperature: 72-80F
Diet: Omnivorous
Level of care: Medium
General Notes:
The Madagascan Rainbowfish (Bedotia geayi)inhabits fast moving mountain streams in Madagascar. The fish has a strong lateral compression and is elongated. A dark black-ish band runs down the center of the fish, lengthwise, from the eye to base of the caudal fin. The body is a yellowish tan in color. The tail of this species has a rather unique marking in that black banding makes the tail appear squared off. Both males and females develop highly irridescent and metallic sets of scales in the center of the body, along the top of the dark band. Males will develop deep reddish-orange coloration in their anal and caudal fins.
This fish is a mid to top level swimmer and is very peaceful. It should not be kept with aggressive or boisterous fish. Ample swimming space is required as this fish is quite active. It is a schooling fish which must be kept in groups of at least 5 or 6 specimens to avoid reclusiveness.
This species tolerates a moderate or strong current and fares well in bright lighting, unlike many other fish species. Water should be well oxygenated. Live plants are appreciated.
It is intolerant of poor water conditions and must have clean water. Its diet should include both meaty foods and vegetable matter.
This species is difficult to find. Prices gravitate around 8-10$ US.

A beautiful fish. It is almost an "in between" size for rainbowfish, being larger than Celebese and Threadfins, but smaller than Boesmanis, etc. Spends most of the day near the surface of the water, more so than other similar species. They love to eat, as with most rainbows and relish anything meaty. They're really quite stunning fish and the males develop such a pretty red tint to their anal and dorsal fins.
