redtailedblackshark

Description: Compatibility: Semi-Aggressive Community Fish
Maximum Size: 4-6 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 29G
Temperature: 72-82F
Diet: Will accept most types of food, likes sinking shrimp pellets.
Level of care: Easy
General Notes: A loner, the species is territorial and intolerant of its own species through sometimes more accepting of unrelated tankmates. They sometimes tend to get "grumpy" as they get older and larger...so best not to keep with tiny fish. They can be very entertaining and a great addition to the right community tank. Requires a large tank with a fine gravel bottom. Needs hiding places among roots and rocks. Though there should be swimming room the tank as this is a very active fish, it should have plenty of plants or decorations so that the fish can stake-out territories w/o visual contact with neighbors.

Pros: looks great, very active, eats some algae
Cons: can be aggressive

The red tailed shark is a great fish to have in the suitable tank, when housed improperly it can become a terror.

They should be housed with semi-aggressive fish that can stand up for them selves. I have mine with, clown loaches, tiger barbs, swordtails, danios and an opaline gourami. All these fish a pretty much equal in aggression and happily live together in my tank.

Less suitable choices would be tetras, cory\'s and angelfish.

Pros: cool, clean up great
Cons: can cause havoc

These are nice fish to have and can grow quite large quick, so have a larger tank. Sometimes is seems to be playing with my plecos. It only seems to go after the slower, larger fish though. He really likes to pick on my plecos. But they always get him back.

Pros: dark color, gracefull movments
Cons: bully, aggressive

This shark is peacefull when left alone, but if he sees fish near him he chases them away... very territorial... Was told other of his species would calm him down... i have an albino red tail shark, didn't help. The albino is peacefull but the red tail is mean at times... but he likes to eat off the bottom of tank and be solo.

Pros: active, independent
Cons: territory

I had this fish in a tropical community set up with peaceful-type fish (about 9 in all). The red-tail wanders the bottom mostly and usually the peaceful breeds moved out of its way when it combed the bottom. very fun to watch this fish explore.

Pros: Fun to watch
Cons: species

these fish are pretty fun to watch, but they are one of the most aggresie fish you will ever own.
I too tried to keep an albino with the reguar, but it didnt help at all. The "bully" chased everyone around till they stopped eating and died.

Pros: very graceful, fun
Cons: territorial

unlike some redtail sharks mine is by far the peacfulest and most independent fish ive ever seen. He is very social with some of my fish and will even let them in his territory but I never put my brothers betta in there because its my rts's only nemesis so I keep her in a net when doing water changes for her vase.
