Description:
|
Compatibility: Aggressive
Maximum Size: 8-10 in
Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons
Temperature: 78-80F
Diet: Herbivore
Level of care: Easy
General Notes: The Severum is a lovely cichlid. it breeds very well but it eats the fry. It grows to 8 inch (20cm) and makes an excellent show fish. This fish is not for beginners. During mating season they will turn very aggressive, the female will turn pitch black with a white belly and the male will turn a dark green. A truly nice fish.
Commonly H. efaciatus is seen in the hobby mislabled as H. severus.

it\'s a Cichlid, so it may be aggressive

The Severum is a great fish to start out with when keeping Cichlids. They aren\'t as aggressive as other Cichlids, but that just may have been the temperment of my particular fish. The ones I had would mostly bicker amongst themselves and leave other species alone. They were not aggressive to my Clown Loaches at all, despite the fact that the Clowns paid no attention to the territorial confines of other fish and would often venture upwards to check out what\'s happening with the Severums.
When they\'re young, Severums are very cute, with their small frame and oversized eyes. But they grow quickly and develop very nice coloration. There are a few different color variations, but I had Green Severums, which look similar to what is in the picture for this entry. They are very pretty, looking almost like Discus (at a fraction of the price!). 55 gallons is definitely the bare minimum for Severums. I had 4 Severums in a 55, and I had give them back to the pet store because they got so large.
One thing to note: If you have bottom feeders and feed them tablet food, make sure that the tablets are too large to be eaten by the Severums! When I dropped in TetraMin Tablets, my Severums would just snatch them as they dropped to the bottom and swallow them whole! I had to switch to larger tablets in order for my Clown Loaches to eat.
