Temperature: 72-82F
Diet: Mainly an herbivore. Their diet should consist of vegetable based food. In the wild they do eat small critters that live in algae, but meat based food should not be a large part of their diet.
Level of care: Medium
General Notes: Juveniles are blue with black verticle stripes running down their sides, males turn yellow when they mature. A very territorial and aggressive fish; a tank of 50 or more gallons is needed. It is suggested to keep a ratio of 2 females per male to disperse aggression. This fish should be provided with hiding places such as caves and rockwork. Kenyi cichlids are mouth brooders. Suitable tankmates are other African cichlids and catfish species.

Not generally recommended for those wanting a compatible community of Malawi cichlids. Well suited to a community of aggressive fish or a male of this species is likely to dominate and terrorize his tankmates. Once experienced in fish with attitude and some aggression and considering looking for something a bit more boisterous this species will not let you down in a tank with some of the more pugnacious species.

Try to shop for mature fish. It is very difficult to sex younger fish as they all look very similar.

in my experience even the proper catfish for the reigon is not compatable with any malawi breeds if kept in aquaria. Secondly if you plan to keep females with a male and you provide proper conditions expect breeding and inturn alot of aggression.
