General Notes: Calvus hail from the rocky areas of Lake Tanganyika where they hunt small fry and insects hiding in the crevices of the rocks. A laterally compressed lets them squeeze between the rocks to get this food, and to offer protection from other cichlids. When not able to reach the rocks for protection, the Calvus will bend their body towards their attacker and expose their tough scales, leaving the attacker with nothing but tough scales to bite.
Calvus are rather docile despite their look. They should be housed with other Lake Tanganyika cichlids. They shouldn't cause any aggression problems to other adult fish, but fry and juvenile fish will most likely disappear if a Calvus is in the tank.
Like most Lake Tang cichlids, this is a very slow grower. It will take an average of 2 years to reach sexual maturity. The males usually grow larger than the females.
The Calvus Cichlid is a shell spawner, so shells or thin rock crevices should be provided. This is not one of the easiest cichlids to breed but it is possible.
Being a Carinvore the Calvus should have a diet of more meaty foods such as blood worms, brine and mysis shrimp, and carnivore flake and pellet foods.
The calvus is a great addition to any Lake Tang cichlid tank. Not only do they have a very menecing, odd look, but they have tons of personality and not so much aggression.

i would recommend this fish to any one who is trying to set up a tang tank...they keep to themselves especially if they have shells big enough for them to dwell in
