Description:
|
Compatibility: Community when not breeding
Maximum Size: 3 in.
Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons
Temperature: 75-80F
Diet: Omnivore
Level of care: Easy
General Notes: This South American Dwarf Cichlid is not as sensitive to water conditions as its cousins. It can be found in the wild in water up to a pH of 7.6. It is relatively shy, which plenty of cover and dither fish will help alleviate. Also, it is generally a harem breeder. Males vary in color from standard wild forms to double and triple red varieties. A. cacatuoides often does not accept flake, but will heartily eat frozen or live foods.

I just bought a mating pair at the Texas Cichlid Association's Show yesterday for $15...going back for the auction today. They are a wonderful pair although shy. I have seen a little interaction with me, but they are new and will need time to adapt!

I absolutely love my cockatoo cichlids! They are so beautiful and cute...they were very shy the first day I put them in my tank but over a few days they became more comfortable. Now when I sit in front of the tank, they come up and look at me.
I have them with tetras, gouramis, a betta and a pleco (in a 32 Gallon tank). They are community fish but sometimes can be grumpy and chase others away. They have never attacked though. This grumpiness usually corresponds with eating or breeding. My male cockatoo loves the algea flakes I put in for the pleco. When he is munching away he does not like other fish near him. My female cockatoo found a little "cave" under one of my large plastic decorations. She has been scoping it out (probably for a breeding area) and can be mean when others come near it.
