platy

Description: Compatibility: Peaceful Community Fish
Maximum Size: 2-3 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 10G
Temperature: 72-82F
Diet: High quality flake food, mix it up with live or frozen food from time to time.
Level of care: Easy
General Notes: Platies are a great beginner fish. They are hardy and easy to take care of, requiring no special tank parameters as long as they are in a large enough tank. There are more than 40 varieties of platies. Selective cross-breeding with sword tails and mollies have resulted platies with slight spike at its caudal fins and hi-fin varieties. Because adult platies will eat their young, floating plants would help increase the chance of the baby platies to survive. As with all livebearers, it is best to keep at least 2 or 3 females per male in the tank to reduce pestering from the male.

Pros: Hardy, peaceful, attractive
Cons:

These are some of the most peaceful livebearers, that don\'t have some of the \"peskiness\" of swordtails or mollies. They breed less than guppies, so fry are generally easy to find homes for. They make great community fish.

Pros: Many available colors
Cons:

Nice fish, available in any color imaginable. Great community fish, pretty hardy.

There are also dwarf platies available, which get to around 1 inch long... so they still look like babies when full grown. As a plus, my dwarf male doesn\'t pester the regular size female, although they do breed. He\'s about 1/4 the size of her, so he couldn\'t pester her if he wanted to.

Pros: nice color
Cons: somewhat dirty

My platies had fry within a week of being in the tank, and as of now there are about 6 left hiding in the plants.

Pros: Color Variations are fantastic
Cons: This is such a great fish there isnt any

This is a wonderful fish for beginners of breeding. Since they come in so many colors like the guppy, they are so beautiful and add so much color to a tank. These are easy to breed. Have atleast 2 females per male as having one female the male will make the female stressed out. Anyway, I highly recommend this fish to any aquarists willing to have a peaceful and colorful tank.

Pros: Very colorful and peaceful
Cons: None

These fish are great! I currently have 5 adults (2 males, 3 females) and 18 fry! They breed like crazy, but make sure if you plan on breeding have at least 1 male per 2 females. If they do have fry, the fry are really small so you'll have to search!

Pros: Array
Cons: Array

Platies are real peaceful fish. They might not be the most interesting to watch, but its a great pleasure to the eyes. This is because platies have all different types of strains and colors.

If you have females and males, they mate. There's hardly anything you can do about it. It's good to keep this in mind when buy platies or swordtails.

Pros: Very colourful fish and excellent for algae control
Cons: Nothing negative to say about platys

I decided to set up a a planted aquarium but also wanted something a little different and eye catching. I ended up opting for a planted central american biotope as both fish and plants from this area of the world were readily avilable at the LFS. Several fishes available included ameca splendens, mollies, swords, guppies and platys. As my tank was small, 15 gal, the most suitable fish for my purposes was the platy.

The planted tank was initially cycled using a raw shrimp. During the cycling process there was considerable algal growth on the plants, rocks and the substrate. Within 1 week of introduction to the tank the platys devoured most of the brown algae and the green beard algae .

This was my first planted tank and the platys add intrest through the wide variety of colours. Also due to their ability to control algae people viewing the tank actually believe that I know something about keeeping a planted aquarium.

Pros: Cheap, Good beginner fish, Active
Cons: Pick a good one

Great fish, great beginner fish will survive anything, very inquisitive and active, but won't bother other fish much. Howvere, don't pick the quiet ones that hide and won't ever come out they aren't usually good. I had 3, 2 lively ones I still have and one shy one that died (although they will be shy and hide to begin with as it may take a little while for them to come out of their shell). I have a male and female, male may bother the female slightly but she can hold her own so its okay.

Pros: Playful, Active, Easy. That is what Platys are all about.
Cons: Medium Bio-Load

Platys are the most dosile fish I have found in my 10 gallon they were so active, always meeting you at the front of the tank to be fed. Always swimming around playing in the bubbles, filter current, or anywhere else they can find. Including pushing my snail off the glass.
They do have a medium Bio-Load. I did 40-50% Water change every Sunday when in my 10 gallon, and it was always clean. Now they are in my 30g, and they are even more active.
Great Fish for begginers!
Fun to watch..

Pros: Colorful, fun to watch, easy care
Cons: Suicidal

Mine are fun to watch. They love to pick at some algae on rocks or plants. They're pretty gentle and get along with most fish.

Mine tend to try to be suicidal and jump through gaps in my tank lid. But now I have the gaps covered, and they haven't tried to jump out since then.
