Diet: Mainly eats vegetable matter, one of the few fish that really cleans a tank up of algae, esp hair algae.
Level of care: easy
General Notes: The American Flagfish is one of the few native American killifish to regularly find its way into pet shops. These fish are good for beginners, as they are hardy, easy to take care of and relatively easy to breed. They are very colorful fish the males usually show a blue-green base color with horizontal red stripes on the body and fins. The female of the species are generally green with a black dorsal spot.

This was my first algae eating fish, and it did a fabulous job of that little white fuzzy algae that is semi-attached and comes off easily if you shake the plant it is growing on. They decimated the algae in a matter of a couple days. I started with 2 females, then got several more, including a single male. At that time I had 6 females and 1 male, and the same day I introduced the male into the tank, he started mating with the dominant female.
I moved them to a 5gallon tank with some plants and they proceeded to mate for several days, producing hundred of eggs. The female was removed, leaving the male to fan the eggs. Upon hatching, I removed the male and started to raise the fry. I was a noob at the time so I successfully killed them all, with my last few getting sucked up into a filter intake that should have had floss on it.
This is a great started fish, although it can be a bit bossy toward the other fish at feeding time.
Also, after rearranging the plant layout several times which stirred up large amounts of detritus, I would always lose one the following day. It seems that these fish DO NOT tolerate dirty turbid water, even only for a few hours.

i dont have any but i catch wild ones every single day in a creek about 30yards away from my house. and the males are colorful. I also catch sticklebacks, texas cichlids, and crayfish.
