Description:
|
Compatibility: Peaceful, wonderful community tetra.
Maximum Size: 2 Inches
Minimum Tank Size: 10 Gallons
Temperature: 74-82F
Diet: Omnivore
Level of care: Moderate
General Notes: A very similar cousin of the Neon Tetra, the cardinal possesses brighter red and blue colors spanning the entire length of its body.
Cardinals originate from the blackwater regions of the Amazon in Brazil, Colombia, Guyana and Venezuela. The same region and conditions Discus and Angels are found. Cardinals are natural prey of the Angelfish in the wild.
When keeping cardinals, schools of 6 or more are
recommended. Good water conditions are a must even though the Cardinal is a bit hardier than the Neon.
Sexing is very difficult with Cardinals and breeding is not much easier. Only a few commercial breeders have mastered the art. They are egg scatterers and will drop their eggs to the substrate.
These fish are mainly imported wild caught because of the lack of breeding, and are a seasonal fish. Some times during the year you may not be able to find many of these at your Local Fish Store.

I got 6 cardinals a few weeks ago and put them in my 20g long with the neons and they are doing great . These fish are really peaceful and adds color to any aquarium. If you have any big fish like angels they will get eaten when the angels get to adult size. The only way to sex these are by looking at there stomach area and if its a flat stomach its a male and if its rounded then it is a female. Usually when i go to my LFS they dont\' have them except for the summer so i guess that is when most people havest them.

Pros:

|
Cons:
|
jumpers, not too friendly

I have 4 of these little beauties swimming around, 3 males and 1 female. The females have a round lil belly and the males seem to have more of a flat underside. They seem to float everywhere, feeding on the bottom and the top of the tank. But unlike the rest of my fish they aren\'t as friendly when i put my hand by the tank. they usually swim away, and hide when i come around. They seem to be very active but when they get scared they tend to swim around and they will jump out of the tank. Thankfully they have never jumped out of the tank itself. They are perfect lil pets, and tons of fun to watch. Currently i have them with a couple mollies and a few other tetras in a 20 gallon tank.

An absolutely beautiful fish that everyone will appreciate seeing in you tank.
Very rarely get to the 2" stated but mine are about 1½" and may grow some more.I can't really say anything bad about this fish.Better than Neons imho.

|
Cons:

hard to keep, bitter

They are really colorful fish. Mine didn't live long though. Apparently they are hard to adapt to water. Prefers acidic soft water. They can be mean to other fish (colors make it too cocky ).
