Description:
|
Compatibility: Aggressive, should be housed with only other large cichlids.
Maximum Size: 7-10 Inches
Minimum Tank Size: 50 Gallons
Temperature: 74-80F
Diet: Omnivore
Level of care: Easy
General Notes: Named after the famous boxer, and rightly so, this cichlid lives up to its name. It should only be housed with other large cichlids of the same temperament.
The Jack Dempsey is a brown to grey based fish with iridescent blue and green scales covering it's sides. It is known for having a few iridescent scales in a half moon around its eye.
In the wild the Jack Dempsey is found in streams, pools, and drainage channels of Central America around South Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras.
Sexing Jack Dempseys is not an easy task to do. The females are usually less brightly colored and smaller then the males. Once a pair has formed they will choose a flat surface to lay their eggs. Each spawn can bring up to 500 eggs/fry.
One of the most recognized Central American Cichlids in the hobby, the Jack Dempsey is fairly easy to keep and breed, provided a large enough tank.
