convictcichlid

Description: Compatibility: Keep with fish of similar aggressivness, and/or larger fish.
Maximum Size: 5-6 in.
Minimum Tank Size: 20 Gallons
Temperature: 68°- 80°F
Diet: Will accept flakes, cichlid pellets, frozen/live brine shrimp, blood worms, and vegetables like chopped-up spinach leaves. They are omnivorous, and not picky eaters.
Level of care: Easy. Great beginner cichlid.
General Notes: "Just add water" A catchy phrase that is literally true. If you end up with a male and female, chances are you will get fry sooner or later. Easy breeder and spawns on flat surfaces. Very hardy and a great starter cichlid. Has a mean attitude though and careful stocking of tankmates is needed. Females tend to be smaller than males, and have orange scales on their sides.

Pros: Smart fish, easy care for, joy to watch
Cons:

Can grow to 4 inches first year. I bought two of them and they are fun to watch. Although I did end up with two males. After getting to 4 inches they did start to fight and had to split. If you are looking for a pair to breed I would buy 4 or 5 when they are small and wait it out to see if you can find a pair.

Pros: easy to breed, and easy to care for, just add water basically
Cons: Array

Very good fish, but territorial. Keep lots of hiding spots and caves, these fish will breed large quantities, very fun fish to watch, i would recommend a species tank if thinking about breeding.

convict cichlids are very nice fish.i have a 4" breeding pair which are looking after about 100-150 fry at the moment.(hard to count really).i hope to sell all except about 6 which i will raise together and try to get a couple more breeding pairs if possible. i will then sell anything else. these fish are quite aggressive so should only be kept with other cichlids of similiar or larger sizes and temperement.

A very good starter fish (cichlid species)! I have 120 gallon tank filled w/ convicts. Very easy to care for. Very territorial, will rearange the tank and move things around. Loves to dig and hide in caves. Its fun watching them!

telling sex between them is simple. females have red bellies and thier fins arnt as pointed. i had my two for about 2 weeks before they spawned and now i have about 50 fry swimming around. had to move my pleco out, though. he got torn apart by the female. she just wouldnt leave him alone wherever he went. even one time i was cleaning the tank and replanting some plants and she nipped me when i got to close to the nest. thier good mommys. good starter fish for breeding
