Description:
|
Common Name: Moneywort
Scientific Name: Bacopa monnieri
Light: Medium to High
Co2: Not Essential to growth
Difficulty: Easy
This pan tropic stem plant is a bright light green in color, with small round to oblong leaves. In the wild, this plant grows emersed during the dry season and converts to its other growth form. The stems and leaves of B. monnieri are almost succulent in nature, being quite thick. The stems of this species are quite solid and are easily broken if bent. In fact, the stems are sturdy enough that this species will continue to grow up and out of the water (in emersed form) if allowed to reach the surface; it will not merely curl at the water’s surface. As a result, this plant maintains its strong vertical appearance even in very high lighting.
Bacopa monnieri is an Ayurvedic herb plant, also known as Brahmi, which is used for its supposed effects on the brain and nervous system, among other things.
This plant is one of the most common in the hobby and is a good choice for beginners. It is low cost, easy to find, and makes few demands on the aquarist. It is tolerant of a wide range of conditions. Co2 is not necessary to growth, but as with most plants, would be beneficial. B. monnieri’s greatest need is moderate to bright lighting. In adequate lighting with a good fertilization regimen, growth becomes nice and compact, with less space between internodes.
Propagation is achieved by cutting off sideshoots and planting or by topping off the stems and replanting.
Bacopa monnieri is best used in groups of many stems for the most visual impact. It is suited for the midground or background of small to large aquariums.

Cons:

needs a decent amount of light

This is a great plant for begginers but when i had some of this it didn\'t grow that good because i didn\'t have enough lighting (less then 1.5wpg) and the bottom of the plant started rotting but with decent lighting this is a very fast propogating plant and grows nicely.

I bought one bundle of it for 1.99 over three years ago when I first started with the hobby. Ive never had to buy more. I split the bundle into three small groups (4-5 stalks each) planted two in the gravel, and floated to other. My fish eat at it, and its still hardy enough to stay green and growing.
The stalks I floated grew nicely under a standard starter kit hood light. It did actually grow up and out of the water.

Cons:

I love this plant. I got 2 of mine at walmart for only $2.30 each, and both are growing fast. I added flourapride to my tank, and have no co2, so this really takes no special care to grow, only a decent amount of light.
