Description:
|
Common Name: Hornwort
Scientific Name: Ceratophyllum demersum
Light: Very Low to Very High
Co2: Not essential to growth
Level of Difficulty: Very Easy
Ceratophyllum demersum is a dark green, needle-leaved plant found worldwide. In the wild, it is found both floating and planted. This plant has no roots, but if placed in the substrate, it will anchor itself with some of its lower foliage. The leaves are quite thin and cover the majority of the stem, giving it the appearance of an animal's tail. In fact, this plant is occassionally referred to as "foxtail" or "coontail".
In the aquarium, it is very undemanding - and is one of the most widely used plants, especially for beginners due to it's ease of keeping and availabilty. It is not picky about lighting conditions and does not require Co2, a nutritious substrate, or even fertilization. In dimmer lighting, the plant grows "leggier" with longer spaces between leaf internodes, but still grows at a moderate pace. In higher light, especially with Co2 and water column fertilization, the growth can be very rapid. Due to this plant's growth rate and habits, it is good at outcompeting algae in newly established planted tanks. It is also used in ponds.
If anchored, this plant concentrates much of it's efforts on gaining height and one single stem can grow quite long if allowed. If left floating, C. demersum will usually grow more branches.
To propogate, simply cut off a section of the stem and either let it float or plant it. New growth will occur where the older stem was cut and the new section will expand as well.
When floating, this plant provides cover for light-shy fish or fry and makes surface fish such as Gouramis and bettas feel more comfortable.

This is a really great plant and easy to grow. It is really good for tanks that have lots of algae and helps by absorbing the nutrients in the water. Also if you have a big group of them it is a great place for fry to hide. Hornwort absorbs a lot of nutrients becuase it doesn\'t have any roots so the only way to absorb nutrients is through its leaves and stem which makes it so useful in planted aquariums.

Wanted to try out Hornwort because of it's ease of maintaining, low light, and fast growth. Found out, it's Messy!! Bristles breaking off and ending up in the filter, floating loose in the tank bristles stuck in the gravel. Wasn't in the tank long enough to see it's benefits. Just too messy.
