General Notes:
This gourami is a selectively bred color morph of Trichogaster trichopterus. There are many other variants available, including a blue, gold, opaline and a few others color forms. Blue and gold tend to be the most common.
The Platinum variety is a striking off-white color, with opalescent dotted markings throughout its otherwise clear fins. The iris has a reddish orange tint. There is often the remnants of a dark spot at the base of the tail. As with other gourami species, the body is strongly laterally compressed, with a long anal fin which follows much of the fish’s underside. The dorsal fin is long and pointed (males tend to have more pointed dorsals, and females are slightly more rounded). The ventral fins are thin and filamentous and are used to examine its surroundings.
The original fish, in the wild, inhabits densely vegetated, slow moving bodies of water in Southeast Asia, in areas such as Burma, Malaysia, Borneo, Thailand and Vietnam. As a result, this species fares best in a heavily planted tank, with a low to moderate current and ample hiding places. Dark colors in an aquarium promote brighter coloration. An ideal tank has a lot of live plants with adequate open swimming space. Floating plants such as Duckweed or riccia are particularly appreciated by this species.
This species, as with most gouramis, is territorial towards males and other gouramis. This species appears to be somewhat more aggressive than others. Some make excellent community tank candidates; others will not tolerate other fish, except perhaps small schooling fish. The platinum gourami is highly individualistic in temperment.
Being an anabantoid, T. trichopterus possesses a "Labyrinth Organ" or accessory breathing apparatus that allows it to breathe atmospheric air. It is located above the gills and is made up of many folded tissues which are covered with blood vessels to allow the exchange of oxygen. This permits the fish to breathe in even low-oxygen waters in the wild, such as stagnant or slow moving bodies of water. This fish must have access to the surface.
As with other gouramis, males will sometimes blow bubble nests (using pieces of live plants if available). These are generally regarded as a sign of contentment and can signal that the male is trying to catch the attention of a female.
