flood prevention?

two areas i realized might cause flooding.

1. pump stops working which equals
   a. water still flows from the overflow into the sump
   b. it'll cause water to be sucked back thro the pump

    - i have enough space in my sump that the water still flowing from my overflow willnot spill out of the sump.
    - the return head is a bit lower than the overflow level but i think if i keep the water level low enough in the sump, it'll also have enough room for that also? am i correct?

2. overflow gets clogged which equals
     a. water continues to get pumped into the tank which will flood the tank
     b. the pump runs dry after it pumps all the water out of the sump

      - a solution would be to use a float switch to turn off the pump after the water level reaches a certain level. any other solutions?

That's what I pretty much did in question 1.  
For question 2, I use a float valve also but haven't had time to have a electrical device to shut it off the pump after a certain level.
