Default SPIKE'S 30 GALLON PLANTED

30 GALLON PLANTED AQUARIUM

FISH STOCK: Two Dollar Sunfish, Two Blue Spotted Sunfish, Four American-Flag Fish, Six Golden Top Minnows, Six Blue Fin Killifish, One Swamp Darter, Two Crested Gobies, One Pleco. All fish except Pleco collected from the Florida Everglades.

AQUATIC PLANTS: All plants collected in the Everglades, I have yet to identify them.

SUBSTRATE: Crushed fossilized coral and ancient seabed collected from the Everglades. Substrate is heavy in iron and has a beautiful golden hue.

LIGHTING: Two GE Aqua Glow 15 watt fluorescent tubes hung from ceiling.

HOOD: Framed removable plastic screen.

FILTRATION: One rifled Aqua Clear 200, One Wisper air pump with two airstones. Frequent water changes with local well water. The water in this aquarium has been crystal clear since its creation.

COMMENTS: This is one of several of my aquariums, the largest being a 55 Galllon tank. This tank is my favorite. The water is on the low end of the brackish scale. I strived to create an underwater habitat that duplicates the species' natural environment. There are several types of aquatic insects, snails, clams, shrimp and crayfish scattered throghout the tank. This is a great community tank and all the fish get along quite well. Rarely do any of the fish suffer even the slightest fin damage. All the fish species' colors have developed exceptionally. The fish get a wide variety of food including dried red mosquito larva, ghost shrimp, live brine shrimp, snails, and crawfish.

Nice tank. And it was a good idea to list all the other things such as occupants, plants, subtrate, and lighting. Not many other people think of that when posting their pics.

Collecting the fish is my version of going to the LFS. I have several great spots for collecting in the Everglades. I use a long handled dip net and a lot of patience although blind stabs in the weeds often yield some nice fish. Often fish aquired on blind stabs are slightly injured or have some fin damage. I place all new fish in a seperate tank to let them heel and become adjusted to aquarium lights. I feed these new fish live brine shrimp with an eye dropper. Eventually I change the food to dried blood worms soaked in water. After the break in period the fish will feed on food from the surface. When I feel they are ready and free of disease I place them in my community tanks. With the Dollar Sunfish the net is submerged in the water, the fish become curious of the net and will soon school above it, then I simply scoop them up.

Nice tank. I like the rock formations. Looks larger than a 30 gal.

I did some artwork up there a few months ago for the Beat Club and Babes. Looks like your addicted to the hobby like me.

Cheers.

Soulfish,

I just finished looking at your spectacular collection of fish. I really like the Golden Wonder Killie, did you get this fish locally? The Peacock Gudgeons are cool. Great collection of Peacock Cichlids as well. Too bad I like plants too much to keep cichlids.
