Default Lakea's 55 gallon Unplanted

Okay I redid my 55 gallon using both sand and black gravel. This is just made up of all my leftovers, plants/rocks/driftwood/etc but I think it turned out pretty nice. My BN will go back in there and I think I will continue with my original idea of a community tank with angels/rasboras/possibly corys.

Can you find the coconuts?

I like how you arranged those rocks. BTW, what kind of rocks won't effect hardness and pH?

I do have a hard time with hardness and pH, our tap water comes from the lake and both specs tend to fluctuate, so I try to keep rocks that won't affect pH, unfortunately a few of the rocks I have I don't know what they are. I think I have some Texas Holey rock which does raise pH and calcium.

You want hard insoluble rocks. Slate, sandstone, granite, petrified wood, quartz are some that won't affect pH/hardness. One way you can tell is by the vinegar test, put a few drops of vinegar on the rock, if it fizzes than it will affect pH/hardness, though that does not work for all rocks, there are some other things you can use, or you can just let your rocks soak a bucket of water and test it.

And that is about all I know about rocks. Thanks for the comment!

Sorry Lakea, I don't mean to hijack your thread.

Carbonate rocks will affect hardness and pH. Limestone for example.
(fyi, sandstone, if it has a carbonate cement, can affect hardness and pH... same for slate/shale. I've collected sandstone and shale/slate samples for school that had a carbonate/dolomite cement.) Doing the 'vinegar test' should tell you if it has a high concentration of carbonates. Hydrochloric acid will tell you if there's even a little... of course, not everyone can readily get their hands on HCl

Igneous rocks definitely shouldn't affect your pH (granite, scoria [lava rock])

Oh, how I just love rocks!

I got a new pl*c, a girlfriend for my BN, she is a good looking fish! Right now she is pretty much attached to that coconut shell, maybe I can get a better pic later.

I'll see how my BNs are do over the next week or so and then hopefully get my community tank going!
