I would tie the java fern to a rock or piece of driftwood with fishing line and the roots will just do their own thing and attach themselves to whatever is near it.

krisinu - where do you go for your fish? I used to live in Buffalo, check out "The Fish Place" in North Tonawanda, it is awesome. I can honestly say that I really miss going to that LFS.

I've gone to the fish place too, got all my plants from there so far.

I've had a bloom of brown algae, it's been really p*ssing me off! about 2 of the java fern leaves are completely covered with the stuff. I've heard this is a phenomenon with news tanks so I guess I must deal with it. Green algae hasn't been much of a problem, just the brown stuff.

here's an updated pic of the tank taken today:

Overall it's been fun watching this develop; pruning the plants to watch them grow again.

The end of the semester is coming up so transporting this thing home will be an issue. I'm thinking of taking most of the water out, maybe leaving about 3-4 inches worth above the gravel line. to keep the plants wet. I'll put my fish in a jug of some sort. That's the plan for now.

I just looked at your first pictures of this tank, I was wondering to myself if it was the same tank, hahah.
Overall, your tank looks great for how small it is. I love it!

I must thank everyone for the kind words and tips you guys wrote about my dorm tank. Unfortunately my betta died when transporting her home after graduation.

I took the tank down but I'm thinking of redoing it in my office at my job. This time I'm thinking a black gravel, some slate rocks or wood, clumps of java ferns in the middle, some rotala in the back of one corner, some western milfoil in the back of another corner. Those last two grew like weeds gonna try to contain them better from the start this time, the java fern was a bit more slow growing/not so high maintenance so I'll do more of that. Not sure about fish yet. The secretary has a red adult male betta. I've offered to house it there. Maybe two corries will be added and a snail. There should be enough hiding places for them once the plants grow a bit.
