Default Do cherry shrimp eat cyanobacteria...

blue-green algae? Does anything? I've got a betta tank that's PLAUGED by it...short of ditching everything and starting over, I don't know how to get rid of it. I'm baffled, the betta is the only thing in the tank (aside from decor) he eats ALL the food he is given, and the tank light is only on about 6hrs or so a day...so i don't see it being a 'too much nutirients' thing...I guess maybe it could be bad stuff in the cheapo sand I used as substrate, but its nearly a year old and has been washed numerous times.

i dont think so cause cyanobacteria is a bacteria and not an algae and if i was a cherry shrimp i wouldn't eat bacteria

Yeah... I don't think anything eats that crap. You could try a black out. Since it's a betta you can net him and move it to a vase. Totally black the tank out for a week or two and then do a massive water change.

ya, jedi that's what i think i'm going to have to try...i'm at my wits end with this stuff...but my research has unearthed that the blackout does seem to work on it.

Sure cure for BG "algae" is erythromicin. Impact on your bacterial colony is minimal since it takes very little to get rid of the BG. Much quicker than a "black out".

I've read reports of cherry shrimp devouring BGA. One person was even growing it for his shrimp.

You could always give it a try, but if you decide to medicate if it doesn't work, you will have to remove the shrimp.

Poor circulation in a tank is sometimes blamed for BGA. While it's not necessarily what's causing it in your tank, you might want to look into improving circulation a little bit.
