| Kissy's Career Advice Thread Haha, I'm back, asking people for career advice. Now that I’ve lost interest in studying anything that has to do with fish…I went back to my somewhat original plan of languages. My dad mentioned that I should check out some stuff regarding German as a major or minor or whatever. I'd have to brush up on the German a bit, but other than a lack of vocabulary atm, I'm pretty much fluent. I've found a couple things so far…
Foreign Service Officer: Go to different countries and work for the U.S. Embassy.
Engineer: I don’t know what kind of engineer (my dad's an electrical engineer but I have no interest in that.) German would help if I ever came in contact with a German company like Bosch.
Teacher: Not in the U.S. of course because the pay is lame. But I hear Germany pays better and if I had German, English, and some other subject, I'd have a job. They're kind of low on teachers that are fluent in English, I believe.
I'm not sure about any of these…the foreign officer thing sounds boring and it says I might have to move every 2-4 years and live in "not so great" places…and I'm not really the engineer type, then again, I don't know if I'd be interested in it later…and teaching, gaaaah, I’ve taught Sunday school before but that was for preschoolers, not sure if I could do that on a higher level.
So if anyone has held any of these jobs before or knows of any careers that would involve the German language, let me know. Thanks!

| Foreign investigations/interrogator/translator ... overseas teacher would be really cool, you could be a very valid english teacher in germany, given you could work with german-native tongue students

| Foreign Service Officer sounds very interesting to me! I really just want to travel, and do a lot of work in the field, which is why I chose archaeology when I first went to college. The people at work convinced me that doing petroleum geology though, was just the same (digging in the ground, looking for remains of the past ).
You could probably do some job shadowing to figure out if you'd like any of those. Although, it may be hard to do that with a teacher in Germany, unless you're already over there. lol.
People are always looking for bi/multi-lingual people... so you're already a pretty marketable person. |

| talk to me in 4 years and tell me what you end up doing. pick something in college that interests you, and then turn it into a career, not force yourself into a career path when you are 18. go learn, have fun, and let your curiosity guide you.
...but, if you want a career based on your language skills, go major/minor in a language, and say the history of that region or area, and go work for the CIA or State Department. I'm from the DC area, and know plenty of people whose parents did that stuff. Foreign Service Officers actually live in really nice places, and are treated extremely well. If you like travel and excitement, Clandestine Service (being a CIA spy). Or use your language and get a business degree. Then work in international business.

| Many many if not most people work in a field outside of their major.
So..study something you enjoy.
Since the Germans tend to start world wars....learnign their language seems good.
Russian is another good one to learn.
Go pre-med...the demand for health related professionals going to be huge and tyhat doesnt mean you have to be a doctor.... Knowledge of medical issues plus language could make you invaluable to many institutions and governments

Yeah I took 4 yrs of spanish in high-school, and then 3 trimesters of chinese, both of which are completely useless to me because I'm filipino, unless I somehow became interested in chinese foreign exchange students, or eat in china-town(in philadelphia they speak mostly cantonese) too bad the formal chinese language is mandarin! So yea I know 2 languages, neither of which are mine >_<
Although if I could do this over I'm not really sure what language I would choose to learn

Russian is another good one to learn. | Uh...hmm...well, since my mom has taught German to both my bro and me since 3rd grade when we started homeschooling, I don't really need to STUDY it anymore. I just need to take a class or two to brush up on it. I got a score of 5 (highest possible) on the AP German test...
Haha, as if Russia is any better war-wise. And, no, no point in me learning Russian. I've been doing French since 9th grade. Quote:
