| digital Cameras Ok all my wife wants a new digital camera and I think I will get her one for Xmas. I am looking to spend 300 to 400 bucks. Anyone have any recommendations. I have a while (almost 4 months) to find one but need to start researching now.

| I got a Nikon Coolpix 4800 a couple years ago. Back then it was around $200...not sure how much it is now.
It has 8.3x zoom plus 3x digital zoom I think and a bunch of settings! I use the close-up function a lot (macro I believe?)
Anyway, the only problem with it is that it's kind of bulky for everyday use, but it balances out.

| The DSLR's are a lot to put down, but you just can't get that kind of control and quality with a point and shoot.
If your having trouble choking down the price of the new models, check out the older models of DSLR's. You might not be able to find any with the lens's in with the camera body, but you can still get lens's without paying an arm and a leg. I'm not sure about some of the other brands, but I know that some of the older model Canon Rebels sell for around $400 for just the body brand new. I'm sure the same can be said for Nikkon and others.
Also DSLR's do have fully automatic settings to take photo's. So you don't have to be a camera genius just to take a shot.
Basically I'm just saying that you don't have to spend $1200 for a DSLR.

But, you do have to spend more if you want a DSLR. brian, you're basically looking at two different experiences between a point-and-shoot and the DSLR-type camera to which you referred. What you should buy really depends upon how your wife will use that camera. If she just wants something convenient with which to take pictures, a point-and-shoot will do. If she wants to really learn about photography, she'll want the DSLR.
Personally, I'd wanted a digital camera for a long, long time. But, being into photography (one of my many expensive hobbies ), I wouldn't touch anything less than an DSLR. There's just not enough control with a point-and-shoot to make it fun.
