|  Breed platys with a betta? I currently have a community tank set up (see signature), and we want to add a betta to the mix soon. We also are hoping to get cory and platy babies from the tank as well. Will a male betta be a bad idea? I hear they are predatory fish.

| Bettas eat the eggs and they eat the fry! Even the females will. The parents will also eat their babies too...so if you want to breed successfully, you'll have to take the eggs and babies out of the tank to ensure no canibalization.  Adding a betta will only make the time span between egglaying/fry"laying" shorter and you'll have to be quicker about removing them. I had bettas in with my cories and swordtails and still got fry. But I just let it happen and got the ones that survived.  Good luck!

| hmm, I thought you were trying to breed platys with bettas... thought you were nuts :P Anyways, as was said, a betta will eat the eggs/fry but so will the parent, even my corys will sometimes eat the eggs. What I do is I put all the babies/eggs in a breeding net, but you will have to be there or be prepared to remove the eggs quickly, or remove the mother platy ahead of time. Anyway, good luck!
