| Generally, those mesh cages aren't the best thing for raising fry or for letting a female give birth. From your pics, it looks like she probably has a couple weeks to go. When she is ready, she will turn "squarish." You should not put her in the mesh (if at all) until the last minute as it will stress her out. I know it's hard to let the babies "get eaten." But in the wild, most of the babies would be eaten anyways. If you do decide to raise them, take a look at the link in my signature, I created a "Fry Rearing" page with my rearing suggestions.

| She's making me confused now. Yesterday she looked like she wasn't pregnant at all, like the black was gone, her stomach was smaller and today she looks like she may be again? Im really QUITE confused. How long does it take them from the time of birthing to have all the fry out because I'm not usually here much of the day as I'm at College. I'm really at a loss with her right now.....

| Gestation is usually around a month. Sometimes a mother will release some of the fry, and then wait a couple weeks to release the others. This is because she usually has fry at different stages of gestation inside of her. Especially if she is constantly mating with a male. Even if you take a male away, she can retain his sperm for up to a few months inside of her and continue making new fry for months after she has been seperated. You should really decide at this point whether you want to keep the male and female together for good and deal with all those fry, or if you'd be better off returning one or the other. An adult female platy can have up to 100 fry a month and it takes a lot of tank space to raise 100 new fish.

| Well, as I said, you should think about that NOW as your female is probably going to be having at least a few more batches of fry even if you remove the male TODAY. If you take back the male to the pet store, they will probably swap you for another female or just give you store credit if you want it. (Local fish stores, not chain stores)

| I started out with two platies, now I have like 14 or more in the 75 gallon tank. Oh, and I've only had them for like 5 months
