Hazzamaya, I have rescued many babies who do the same, even dig further into gravel sometimes as i approach them with the net. What i like to do is temporarily take out some decorations so i have room to move my net, i like to keep hood on provides good light to see the little tykes, and then go one at a time, hold net very near where they dig in gravel and within 30 seconds usually, they will come back out of gravel just enough for me to trap them in net and bring to surface to put them in breeding net. Sometimes process takes about 15 minutes though to get up to 20 or so babies, but if you want them it is worth it.

Canoe: Try taking out decorations out in a 10 gallon heavily planted tank , I had to soak one of my daughters medicine droppers in alchohol then let it sit overnight to get them things out of the gravel
