Default Brackish killies!

Whaaaa?
I didn't know wher to post this. Brackish? Killifish? Figured I'd go with Killifish since tht's what they are and the discussion board could use some action anyway.

Say hello to my Mummichogs!
Fundulus heteroclitis
Male

Females

I got 5 of these funny fellas through Aquabid a few months ago. Shipped great, acclimated even better and have been eatin and living like champs. I even got to catch them spawning!
They behave a lot like large poeciliids, and in fact remind a lot of mollies, but are something not quite as common. Unless you do a lot of fishing on the east coast and use these as bait.

Then I found a few of these guys in a ghost shrimp feeder tank.

They might be F. majalis. Soon as I found out they were brackish friendly I fixed to get them into the brackish tank. Unfortunately these guys were too small to go right into the tank with mouths that would happily swallow them whole so I let them chill out in a breeder net for a bit. They seemed to do a lot better with the tank's salinity. With barely a 1/2" between the top of the net box and the tank lid the charming male mummi managed to wiggle his way out of the water and into the net, gobbling up all but one majalis which I suspect was only spared because the mummi was simply too full to squeeze anything else in. I awoke one morning to one really fat mummi and one tiny majalis cowering in a corner scared for his life. Ah what buggers! They're ike stomachs with eyes!

Anyway my last majalis is doing great and will be ready to join the rest of the tank very soon. The mummi's are breeding regularly, still no plans on raising fry but I might have some room and time to consider it this fall. All in all I'm very happy with the mummichogs, a great alternative to mollies and are very fun to watch.

In the picture they were 1" TL. The one I have left is almost 2" now.

Thanks! lol

Yeah, The females are quite drab but I like them. Like mollies, I usually preferred the normal grey ones than the wacky color types.
The male mummi is usually very nicely colored. He'll go dull when he's not happy and it's already happened twice (when I've slacked on water changes) so it keeps me on my toes.
