Post Want beginers info on killies.

I've always been interested in brightly colored killifish but they were never available in my LFSs. I just checked out aquabid.com and there are all kinds available there. I want to keep and breed some killifish but don't know the first thing about them. Most fish books have a very limited section on them. Can you recomend any specialty books? What species should I start out with? Should I get fish or hatch some eggs? (I'm leaning toward eggs because they are cheaper and seem like they will do better through the mail. Plus, I think mail ordering and hatching eggs is a cool part of the killie experience) How long do the eggs last out of the water? What is the procedure for hatching them? Can you point me to any useful web pages?
Thanks for all the help.

Click on this link for a good article, its from the British Killifish Association. I am assuming you are from America - try a search on the American Killifish Association, they have an emailing list with experts you can ask.

http://www.bka.org.uk/intro1.htm

Ive kept Aphyiosemion Gardneri a couple of years ago, forgotten all the stuff I did so am reading up on them myself!

Intending to buy some new Killis soon if I can get my hands on some. They are hard to find in England.

Good luck matey.

I wouldnt say they are any more difficult than any other species of fry. They just need plenty of food and to be kept warm. Im no expert, Ive bred some before though and they did pretty well.

I want some Killis NOW!!!!!

Thanks for the info and keep it coming. You'v e given me some great places to start. I am indeed from America. The town of Redding, in the state of California on the west coast. I tend to think everyone knows where California is, but I don't know much about where anything in the UK is. Its ethnocentricism I guess. I'm about 200 miles north of the San Francisco Bay area. Oh, wait, Sorry don't know how many kilometers that is... Anyway, there aren't any killies available in my area either, but I saw quite a few for sale on aquabid.com.

I did indeed just visit that site. I think a membership was $26.00 which is a bit steep for a beginners pamphlet. I might someday join the organization but for now I think I'll try to find something local. I wouldn't know what to do with their egg and breeding lists anyway!
