| Are all killifish aggressive? Are all killifish aggressive? I had a couple in my rivertank and they tried to eat the otos when I added 4 of them to help out with diatom cleanup detail. Then later I saw them nipping at my Amano Shrimp. I took both of the killifish out and have one in my 29gallon community tank and the other is in the QT for lack of a better place right now. I would put them both in the 29g, but one always bullies the other as they are both males. I've got pics of them here: |

| I don't know much about killifish, and I've never had any. However, I did look into them when I was trying to decide what fish to get, and from what I remember, the ones I saw were all peaceful or passive fish. So no, I don't think that all killifish are aggressive. Maybe its just that type, or just your fish or something. |

| He was in my NWC (no water change) tank and maybe the hormones and pheromones and stuff built up and just got P.O.'ed because of it and took it out on the little guys. |

| I used to have two pairs A. australe killies. I would never consider them "aggressive" just extremely territorial. One male ALWAYS bullied the other male and chased the females around. The lesser male dissappeared one day and a few months ago so did the bigger male (I assume they jumped out, there was no sign of illness whatsoever). All I have left are two females and for a time one also bullied the smaller one but I haven't seen that behavior in months. Now they spend all their time near each other.
Those are beautiful killies, btw! |

| UPDATE on the Killi Aggression:
I separated the killis, putting one in my QT tank and the other in my 29gallon community tank. But after some faulty fish location optimization analysis, I came up with a plan to put both killies in the 29gallon tank. They sparred straight from jump, and it looked pretty harmless at first. They would slide up beside each other, in much the same my FFF did when they mated. "What, maybe I have a male and a female", I thought?! But when I saw one killi with the other killi's dorsal fin the whole way in his mouth, and still tugging for more, I was again "reassured" that I have 2 males on my hands. They were NEVER this aggressive when they were originally housed together in the 20gallon, but I guess after being separated and both feeling like kings-of-the-hill, they are just no good for coexisting anymore. So on to plan E, with one killi staying in the 29 and the other going in the "jail" tank where my wife's synodontis euruptus is. I think these guys woulda' really tore each other up had I not intervened.

| Those are the kind of killifish I got. Currently I have 3 males and I plan on buying some females. Wal-Mart has started selling killifish like that in my area so I think that this species will become popular. The males kinda get aggressive with each other. So far they havent did anything to anyone else yet. Although they could be responsible for my AD frogs mysterious death. I believe I read the other night that this species is more community friendly than others.
