Default New to Killies, please advise

I am going to bring 4 clown killies home this weekend from another hobbyist. These will be my first killies.

I don't know how old these fishes are or been with him.
I read that killies live from 1yr-3yrs.
I intend to house these new guys in my 3weeks old planted tank(approx. 14USGallon ).

Anyone knows what to look out for?
Does these fish like hiding space? I don't have many tall stem plants in my current setup yet cos they're still growing in. I have about 25% of the surface covered with frogbits and half of foreground are glosso.

Current Inhabitants:
3 amano shrimps
4 pencil fish
2 otos

Will my killies be comfortable with their tankmates?
Can I treat them like guppies or they have special requirements to look out for?

I have 2x15watt FL lighting + 1x13watt PL lighting turned on 12hrs a day.
Is this illumination period okay for the killies?

I would appreciate if you can share your experience.

Cheers.

Hi Chyrl!

I can honestly say I don't know too much about them but I found this site which might help.

Thanks lustrouseyes.
I was half-way thru' reading on the same site and thought I might find someone who keeps killies here (and still active on MFT) to share their experiences on these wonderful fishes

***more reading ...........
EEK........ I realised there are more readings required in fishkeeping than water change and scraping algae of the tank glass! :P

Yeah...I came to the same shocking realization a few months ago. I had fish as a kid but I guess I didn't realize all the stuff my parents did. (Or didn't do... our fish didn't last long) But the only thing I know now is before you do ANYTHING, research, read and ask tons of questions - (that, and, stay away from most wal-marts).

Good luck - hope everything goes well for ya!

I dont know too much about killis either, but I did keep one once, and this is what I know.

In the wild, they live in temporary pools of water that evaporate during the dry season. They lays eggs into the dirt at the bottem of the pond before they all die upon the drought. Then new eggs hatch once the water returns.

I have read that you can get killifish eggs, and all you have to do is add water and they hatch (literally).

The killifish I had was a golden color with greenish fins. I beleive it was a playfair panchex (something like that). It died in about two weeks. It was in my 29 gallon.

My theory is that since in the wild, they live in a habitat that most other fish can't live, they don't have to compete with too many other fish so when in a community tank with dwarf gouramis, rainbows sharks, and black ruby barbs, they don't stand a chance, especially with the somewhat aggressive fish I mentioned.

I do not beleive otos or shrimp will be a problem. The pencilfish might be but I don't know much about pencil fish.

I should mention that killis are mostly top level dwellers so if you want to provide hiding places (not sure if they like hiding places or not), try floating plants.

There are a bunch of articles here: http://www.petfish.net/articles.htm

I was looking into keeping them at one point, it seems a species tank or a few small tankmates works best.

I missed out replying to this thread after going through the links by your replies
Thanks a zillion for sharing

Good news is I've brought back the clown killies today and the boy has got them for less than a month...and they look so 'skinny'.

Bad news is one of the killies died after I got home It was a good 1hr ride on the bus!

It was already appearing weak in the plastic bag filled with a handful of java moss when the boy passed it to me.

When I got home, my dad and brother in law suggested I run an airtube into the plastic bag while floating it before releasing them into their new home...
Soon after, 3 of them appeared more energetic but the weak guy stopped gasping for air and died.

They are just so beautiful and hope to keep them happy with my other lampeyes in the same tank.
