Midas vs. Red devil

I have always had this question. What is the difference between the Midas cichlid and the red devil cichlid. My local petsmart use to seperate them and then all the sudden they put them both together in the same tank and just call it the red devil. So is there a difference?

Same genus, different species.

Its so hard to tell these days, so many hybrids of the 2 species are out there. If you find them pure, usually the Red Devils will have bigger lips then the Midas. Midas are usually more stockier then Red Devils.

C-man's right. They are very difficult to tell apart when young, but when they are mature, it's easier. From what I've seen, most Petsmart's, in my area anyway, carry Midas cichlids--but don't take my observations as truth.

Midas or Red Devil either way they are both very mean fish IMO. i watched a video of a red devil take on a prianha and the red devil wasn't back'n down at all, infact it was the aggresser. neither take s$&t from anyone.

Red Devil

20 years ago I had a Red Devil who I bought when he was about an inch long, and had him in a community tank (40 g).

Initially he was a bit aggressive but tolerable. But he go HUGE, ate every single fish in the tank, and had the who tank to himself for years( other than the fish I put in to feed him!).

That Red Devil was a legend with my friends, and lived a long and interesting life!
