Default firemouth cichlids

I have an extra 55 gallon tank Ive decided to start cycling monday. Almost positive I want to stock it with firemouths. What kind of tank decor are they most comfortable with and what are my limitations in a 55? The tank is 4ft long,18in deep,13in wide. Any knowledge of these fish would be appreciated.

You might get away with 3 in a 55. Be prepared to see a lot of lip locking and general fighting. God help the lone one if you get a pair.

Do you know what type of decorations they prefer? Would two be ok with a 4 or 5 inch syndontis cat?

As long as you provide some dark caves for the synos then I don't see a problem. Decor is a matter of personal taste. I prefer a natural looking tank. For these guys you need plenty of fake plants and drift wood. I prefer silk plants. Firemouths dig so live plants won't make it.

I'd also use a fine substrate---such as fine gravel or sand---for these guys...they'll probably appreciate it more than coarse gravel, as they love to sift through the bottom and forage for food. They like to dig a lot, and I think you'll see more natural behavior out of them this way.
